Document Summary
Expanded and intensified the neoliberal programs already in place, and expanded it into the global south (allowing companies to go into these markets) Using loans and debts and the conditions of these loans/debts to push neoliberal ideals. Not until the 1980s that we see the emergence of these legal strategies of corporations to meet their interests. Legal strategies in free trade agreements, and in world trade organization. World trade organization replaced the general agreement on tariffs & trade in the 1950"s. Was an agreement that pushed for the removal of tariffs and subsidies. Wasn"t an institution like the imf or world bank, just a form by which countries could come together and discuss issues around trade. World trade organization provided legal grounds/mechanisms for international commerce. This meant the wto established international laws and contracts that bound governments to particular trade policies. Wto provided legal tools for multinationals to be able to sue governments that opposed their interests (trade liberation)
