Lots of optimism in canadian society (as technology and other measures moved forward, eventually we"d have the capacity to solve most of our social problems too) Ww1 brought a lot of this to the end (lost this faith) See tension between workers and employers as unchangeable. As society and economy moves forward, it might mean things aren"t moving forward (might get worse) End of the era of hope was a common belief. War measures act was a law that allowed the government lots of power to pass laws/act without passing a law to do things. Mobilize the economy/armed forces, spend and borrow money. Keep people in line (suspended civil liberties of individuals) Could do whatever they wanted whenever they wanted. Banned organizations that were suspected of being subversive and people suspected of being troublemakers (radicals, immigrants whom were suspected of not being loyal to canada) See governments enormous expansion of power (run armed forces, do whatever they want)
