Original breakthroughs of this was science, 1930"s ish (tried to group categories as separate, however the similarities between each race were greater than differences) Biologically in terms of inherit properties, there weren"t enough properties to identify a race. What it meant to be black in one period was different from what it meant to be black in another time period (effected by time, society, etc) Political disputes over whether a group should be separated from others or not ( i"m an american, i might be irish catholic, but i am white like you ) Prevailing rules on race are reflections of the views of those who are most powerful in society. Race has always been a tool used by elites to get lower class exploited effectively. Unity between slave population and white population, want to break this unity so they have more control over workers.
