In a capitalist economy, employers need a supply in employees but also need workers increase productivity (this puts pressure on workers to work harder + causes stress on worker) Denied by the occupational health and safety act. Product of significant struggle by the workers health and safety movement in the 1970s. Part of the internal responsibility system, is which employers and workers share responsibility for ensuring safe working conditions thro joint health and safety. Committees in workplace with more than 20 workers. External responsibility system including government inspections, enforcement, fines for violations. Workers in canada have 3 basic rights: right to know, right to participate, right to refuse (from doing unsafe work) Workplace deaths have decline, they remain about 900 a year. Illnesses that result from exposure to workplace hazard. A works choice of working dangerous work is not always voluntary (sometimes they are forced and do not have a chance to say no)
