LIFESCI 2N03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 70: Angiotensin, Extracellular Fluid, Skimmed Milk
Document Summary
Water intoxicaion: excessive water intake or kidney disorder that restricts urine producion: too much water in all luid compartments, confusion, convulsions, possible death. Fluids like water maintain blood volume which afects blood pressure. Kidneys maintain water balance: reabsorb surfaces, excrete wastes and some water (adjust volume and concentraion of urin: instructed by adh, renin, angiotensin, and aldosterone. Working unit in the kidney is the nephron. Blood lows into glomerulus an some of its luid, with dissolved substances, is absorbed into tubule. Fluid and substances needed by body are returned to blood in vessels alongside tubule. Adh: secreted by pituitary gland when instructed by hypothalamus which senses need for water simulates kidneys to reabsorb water: this process also triggers thirst. Renin: released by kidney in response to low blood pressure causes it to reabsorb na+ which causes water retenion. Angiotensin: secreted as proenzyme form by liver and acivated by cascade of enzyme hydrolysis: angiotensinogen.
