LINGUIST 1A03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Habituation, Minimal Pair, Phoneme
Document Summary
Two segments that contrast with each other in a language: phonemes. Two segments that don"t contrast, but are in non-overlapping mutually exclusive and predictable environments: allophones. Question usually asks if sounds are phonemes or allophones. To prove two different phonemes: find a minimal pair (to show evidence of contrast) To demonstrate allophony: show the different environments of the two allophones. Complementary distribution (each phoneme has two allophones: [p] ~ [ph, [t] ~ [th, [k] ~ [kh] Identify and label onset level as the longest permissible sequence of consonants to the left of a nucleus. Identify and label coda level as the remaining unassociated consonants to the right of a nucleus. Native language (l1) is learned as a baby (possibly earlier) When you are used to the phonology of your l1, it is difficult to adapt to different phonological rules in a second language (l2)
