. This course will make our implicit unconscious knowledge CONSCIOUS
. This course will focus on spoken/written languages only
. There are no essays in this class!!!!
. Written parts of midterm, assignments and final are doing analyses of
languages, phonetic transcription
. In the content section there will be a checklist for each week finish the checklist
and you will be set for a good grade
. Quizzes and practice quizzes will show up here (PRACTICE QUIZES: they
will be Thursday to Monday morning) (quizzes are 40 minutes long—
approximately 20 to 30 questions)
. Optional exercises will come out Thursday and have to be in the Dropbox on
avenue by Tuesday
What do we know when we know a language?
. Words, how to communicate, shared meaning of language, sounds as ideas,
sentence structure, grammar, punctuality, syntax order, alphabet/ letters/spelling,
meanings behind the word, spoken languages and how they sounds, (not necessary)
culture of the language and sounds
. Meanings of words but also how the words are combined creates meaning
. How a word or sentence is delivered with intonation
. Expressions, idiomatic expressions
. How to make the sounds, what words sounds like, how to create different word
forms, how to combine words into sentences, what words and sentences mean, how
to create letters out of your hands
. Whats polite/impolite in a variety of situations?
. What things mean in different contexts
. How to read and write in that language
Goals for Today
. Explain the difference between descriptive and prescriptive approaches to
language
. Understand that mental grammar is generative
. Recognize 5 different components of mental grammar
