Marks presuppositions: james saw bill > presupposes that somebody saw bill, james saw bill > presupposes that james saw somebody. James saw bill: in all cases, this proposition is true iff james saw bill. Yes: true if and only iff bill was the only person james saw, only > lead to a truth condition difference. Can also affect the semantic meaning of the sentence. In this case, there is a difference in truth conditions. Difference in truth conditions arises in sentences containing focus sensitive particles.
