Document Summary

Aging is programmed genetically through cells, therefore limits cells" reproductive capacity (called apoptosis) Telomeres shorten at the ends of the chromosome; cell can only be alive for as many telomeres they have; neurons & skeletal muscle don"t regenerate/divide. Cells are in a less organized arrangement in tissues; as body ages, body gets confused as to how many cells there should be & what it should look like. Everytime a cell divides, telomeres shorten & when they get to the end, impairs the cell from dividing again. Mitosis slows down/decreased tissue repair; metabolic rate decreases. Way a protein folds, has an effect on function of the protein depending on how it folds. Neurons/muscle tissue cannot replicate, reducing the function if they are damaged. Environmental exposure increases risk of cancer & disease; examples are ionizing radiation & smoking. Hormonal & reproductive changes: hormone production remains constant but # of tissue receptors decreases. Ovaries cease to respond to fsh & lh (luteinizing hormone)
