MEDRADSC 1B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Anaplasia, Primitive Cell, Necrosis
Document Summary
Normal life span/ cycle of different cell types. Leukocytes = a few days depending on the type. Epithelical divide very rapidly to meet the demand for replacement. Cancer results from altered cell growth/ division and cell differentiation. Cells are specialized according to the function they perform. New cells acquire structure & function of the cells that replace. Cellular growth that is uncoordinated and lacks the normal regulatory controls over cell growth and division: excessive growth deprives other cells of nutrients, expanding mass creates pressure on surrounding structures. Expanding mass compress blood vessels necrosis & inflammation infection (may develop) Malignant cells adjacent tissue cut off blood supply to tissues necrosis more inflammation. Also tumors secrete enzymes that breakdown & destroy cells. Angiogenesis development of new capillaries: enhances the growth of tumors. In situ tumors (tumors which remain pre-invasive for a long time) excellent opportunity for early diagnosis. Grading of tumors based on differentiation of cells.
