Document Summary

To assess the integrity of the synovial joint (often shoulder but other joints are investigated) through the injection of contrast using fluoroscopic guidance. Injection of contrast for mri (mr arthrography) - better at showing soft tissue than x-ray/fluoro. Pain with no definitive diagnosis from other modalities - soft tissue doesn"t show up on an x-ray. Simple sterile tray (ie towels, drape, cleaning forceps, needle driver, cup/bowl for saline) Extension tubing - connects to needle to allow for injection of contrast/saline. Needle for injection (superficial joints require a hypodermic needle, deep joints require a spinal needle); needle depends on area. If for mri: 1 ml syringe for gadolinium, 0. 1ml gad diluted in 20 ml syringe with saline +/- iodinated contrast (some ppl like to inject iodinated contrast for arthrogram, some don"t) Prior to an arthrogram, routine imaging should be done. Have to be done - if its a gross deformity, it will show up on either modality.
