Functions: lighten the weight of the skull, sound resonances. Do not form until about the age of 6yrs, only sinus that"s missing at birth. Best view of it at caldwell view, no frontal sinusitis before age of 6. Within the lateral masses of ethmoid bone. Continue to grow or honeycomb into two groups: anterior and posterior. Anterior group drains into middle nasal meatus. Basal lamella = lateral attachment of middle nasal conchae to lamina papyracea. Roots of teeth and sinuses separated by thin layer of bone, palatine plate. Very thin orbital plate anteriorly, rupture is the blow-out fracture of the eye. Present at birth and continue to grow until 10 to 14 years of age. Within body of sphenoid bone just below sella turcica. Drain into sphenoethmoidal recess directly above superior concha and drains into the superior nasal meatus. Mri: could be black or white for sinuses. Posteriorly, bounded by free edge of nasal septum.
