Character width: the horizontal dimention of a letter is its set width (the body + sliver of space) like height, the width is intrinsic to the typeface. Some have narrow set width and some have a wide one. 16th century, romans started mashing together different styles (bold, semi bold, small caps), typefaces. Bold, semi bold: used to draw emphasis, appears heavier than a regular text. Weight: use to contrast for emphasis, comprehension, clarity (the visual weight conveyed on the page, bold, light: colour. Ink or character colour vs paper or background colour. Complimentary colours can cause vibration even though they may offer appropriate contrast. Analogous colours (ie. blue and green) can be better, but if they are too close, they will require adjustment for legibility.
