A culture were private citizens are not just consumers of culture, but producers (prosumers) of culture. Term is usually applied to the creation of some form of published media. Henry jenkins is a media scholar who believes that there is a great potential for civic engagement & creative expression through participatory culture. Refers ot websites where users are able to interact & collaborate with each other & to generate content in a virtual community. Participatory culture is much wider shape of our society. However, there is a very interesting relationship between the two. Independent no record label or whatever. An aesthetic sensibility where things that are ridiculous to the viewer are considered humorous or appealing. Similar to kitsch = gaudy & tacky popular art forms. Parody borrows styles in order to mock & critique them it works against discourses that take themselves seriously. Is different than pastiche (which lacks critique) Satire implied ridicule of subject, parody ay not.
