Acoustic: The Science of Sound
Sound Waves
Found in many mediums but for the purpose of this class, well talk about air as the medium
Longitudinal waves going back and forth
Characteristic of Sound
Frequency: Pitch & timbre (hz)
Intensity: loudness & sound pressure (decibals)
Time: envelope & duration
Frequency
Musical pitch is based on our perception of the fundamental frequency of periodic sound
waves
Humans hear 20Hz 20 000Hz
Infrasound: cant hear with ears, feel it instead
Ultrasounds: medical and military applications
Timbre
Sound colour the way something sounds
Musical sounds -> harmonic spectrum
Describes in visual terms
Intensity
Perceived as loudness
dB are relative, logarithmic scale
Sometimes measures in phones
Frequency sensitivity & loudness -> low frequency sounds should be mixed at louder frequencies
Vader/sound piece (recommended ear protection)
Sound envelope
Describes a sound over time
A basic envelope is attack, decoy, sustain and release (ADSR)
Frequency effect
Difference tones -> 220Hz 100Hz= 120Hz
Interference beat (chorusing, shimmer)
o 220Hz-215Hz=5Hz
