Document Summary

Organizing digital culture: google, relevance , and the politics of search. Initially google, now instead of just google calling the shots we have facebook & google: two major corporations calling the shots. Yet we are confronted w/ a contradiction. We need these technologies to search & retrieve all of the content that is being shared/ produced. Those processes/rankings/ ltering have huge impact on the success/failure of businesses. And those processes are relatively unknown to us: in de ning what constitutes relevant info for users, search engines actively shape and intervene in the production and perception of knowledge, culture and politics. Point being, it matters whether you"re on the rst page or the second, third . Many sites, especially those of a pornographic nature, would successfully game search rankings by including (or stuf ng) keywords from popular searches (however nonsensical their inclusion) It was a tried & true strategy to manipulate the rankings.
