Can grow on agar plates with lawn of bacteria. 16 hours embryogenesis diploid adult form is hermaphroditic produce egg and sperm self-fertilization or cross fertilization compact genome = 100 megabases. 5 autosomes and 1 x aging phenotype before it dies. Op50: have to provide op50 with uracil or it won"t grow; can control growth of the e. coli bc of this & so the bacterial lawn won"t overgrow so much that you can"t see the c. elegans after. Ngm agar: cholesterol is needed bc c. elegans doesn"t produce it itself & requires it for growth. In colder temperature, metabolism is slowed & so they can be frozen & kept for long periods of time. Growing them in liquid: op50 growing, dispense in growth plate & experiment. Invariant cell lineage each cell gives rise to the same number and type of cells in every embryo.
