Description
Pace of music change increases (along with societal change) • Technological developments (sound recordings, radio, film, tv, computer, nutella) • Led to increase in diverse musical styles ◦ Novel organization, beyond traditional tonality ◦ Experimenting with timbre; electronics (prof. showed electronic piece from youtube.. absolute shit) ▪ called into question the nature of music itself, a question further explored through Nickelback (Zing!) ◦ ragtime, jazz, blues - maintained tonal music, tonal music still maintained today in pop • Modernism (atonality) vs. the 3 B's • Many audiences were not happy, could be related to that whole "world war" thing Radical Expression • Wassily Kandinsky - abstract painter • Pablo Picasso - violin picture from many dimensions, apparently there were some grapes in it too • Architecturally - no more ornamentation (very diff. then complex Victorianism) •
