Hector Berlioz (1803-1869), french • daddy wanted him to be a doctor; went to medical school in Paris, Berlioz dropped out, got some tats (probably) • studied at National Conservatory of Music in Paris; guitarist not pianist • Wrote music criticism to support himself during studies • Wrote his personal life into music ◦ Symphonie Fantastique (1830): Berlioz' obsessive love for Harriet Smithson, he followed her ◦ The Return to Life (1831): marriage proposal to her ◦ Harold in Italy (1834): after two-year stay in Italy • Berlioz and Harriet did get married (note to self: stalking gets results) however they broke up after 7 years (note to self: bad hair does NOT get results) Symphonie Fantastique • Program music - prose narrative written by Berlioz himself ◦ an artist's dream about his beloved and her rejection of him ◦ moves from blissful reverie (1st mov.) to nightmare (mov. 4 & 5) ◦ mov. 4 - "March to the Scaffold"  ▪ dreams he killed his lover ▪ beheaded by guillotine • 5 movements ◦ 1: Dreams, Passions: artists fixates on his beloved ◦ 2: A Ball: he sees her at a d
