Description
Claude Debussy (1862-1918, French) • Died at 56. Funeral paraded through empty streets; Germany was attacking • Born near le gay Paris; transition composer (experimental/weird) • Non-musical background; studied piano & composition at Paris Conservatory (age 10 - 21) • Talented pianist, but never had students or performed • Gentle music, but he was tuff/tumultous • Married a model in 1899 (aiiiiggghht), she attempted suicide, so they broke up, his friends kind of ditched him • Master of Orchestration ◦ e.g. La Mer (1905) - multi-instrument concerto • Was seen as major figure of early 20C music  ◦ expanded possibilities of form, harmony, and timbre • Chevalier of Legion of Honour in France (1903) -- big honour in France  • Widely imitated, very influential e.g. Ravel's Bolero • haha uses umbrella in sun.. lol Impressionism • Latter 19C and early 20C artistic movement • Painters: Monet, Renoir, liked colours more than lines; sensations, perceptions, and light rather than direct representation; kinda hated lines tbh • Symbolist poets/writers: Mallarmé, Rimbaud, Verlaine • Music: blurring of harmonies, rhythms, forms Voiles • Solo piano piece; 2nd of 12 Preludes (Book 1, 1910) • Title comes at the end of the piece ◦ means "sails" or "veils" - suggestive only • Timbre ◦ non-per
