Igor Stravinsky (1882 [Russia] - 1971 [USA, age 88]) • Born St. Petersburg, Russia • Daddy was famous operatic bass • Early composition lessons from Rimsky-Korsakov (famous composer that liked structure) • Reinvented himself throughout life - 3 stylistics periods ◦ Russian (1908-1919) : Ballets incl. Rite of Spring worked with some famous guy ◦ Neoclassical (1920-1954) : Influence of Mozart ◦ Serialism (1954-1968) : Influence of atonality, and Shreddies (punnss). Waited till Schoenberg (main rival) died • Came to LA at beginning of WWII • One of the 20C's most highly regarded composers • Eventually popular, despite riot at 1st performance of Rite of the Spring (1913); dance was part of the reason • him and Debussy were bros, they got a pic together  • Sergei Diaghilev was Stravinsky's hustler, gave him dough The Rite Of Spring (1913) • Premiered in Paris • Soon accepted by audiences and critics • Commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev for his Ballets Russes • Story: a solemn Pagan rite; young girl dances herself to death while sage elders look on • Divided
