Description
The Beach Boys • Started in 1961, surf-rock band of brothers, a cousin, and some poor friend who probably didn't belong • Members ◦ Brian (main guy), Carl, and Dennis Wilson ◦ Cousin Mike Love ◦ Friend Al Jardine • Surf-rock: genre of pop associated with surf culture; originating in Southern California in early 60s • 1st three albums released 62-63 ◦ Surfin' Safari ◦ Surfin' USA ◦ Surfer Girl • Part of 60s psychedelic movement; hippie culture; drugs, "fashion," spiritual freedom, lack of showers • Combined basic rock 'n' roll with sophisticated vocals • "Good Vibrations" originally intended as part of a never-copmleted album Smile, began in 67 ◦ Ambitious nature of Smile led to disputes, Brian Wilson addicted to amphetamines; Band never really achieved earlier success (don't do drugs!) Psychedelic Movement • 1960's movement - music to create hallucinogenic trip for listener (aided by drugs) • Eastern philosophy; meditation & anti-war • Experimented with new instruments, electronic and Eastern (Sitar) • Lyrics increasingly abstract and cryptic • obviously part of hippie revolution • "Summer of Love", with Woodstock (1969) Good Vibrations (1966) • Recorded in individual sections, then vocals added • Quickly topped US and UK charts • Number of unusual features
