Listening to the Music
The Lied
German art song is called the lied (plural, lieder)
Mozart and Beethoven composed songs, but they were not an
important part of their output
The art songs of Schubert emerged from song in popular culture
rather than opera
Schubert’s melodies are more like folk songs than arias

Schubert composed more than six hundred lieder between 1810
and 1828
Rise of art song linked to increasing middle-class demand for
domestic music, the popularity of the piano, and preference for
simple vocal style in contrast to elaborate Italian opera arias
Poetic sources included works by Goethe and Schubert’s
immediate circle of friends

Strophic form: text is organized into several strophes, and music
repeats for each strophe
Modi/ed strophic form: musical repetitions for each strophe
include variations
Through-composed form: music does not repeat for strophes or

/sherman but with an underlying symbolic meaning of seduction
and betrayal

with change in piano /guration, depicts the muddying of the
stream
Song ends with an ironic return to the carefreemusic of the
opening

drawn from
Faust
Dramatic setting: Gretchen sits alone at her spinning wheel and
thinks sadly about Faust, who has abandoned her

Gretchen alternates between recalling her past and facing the
present moment—each return to the present is depicted through
harmonic shifts and changes in rhythm
