Document Summary

Music 2f03 lecture 5 steiner & korngold. Worried that it would be a flop. Steiner convinces producer to create original score. Steiner is inventing musical accompaniment for sound films: theme of three notes, primitive, powerful that represents kong. Conventions invented: association of music with the supernatural. After main theme, no music in city until they enter the fog that surrounds the mythical island. Music begins when you enter the world of the supernatural. Music as they pass through fog is between consonance and dissonance, not threatening but sense of anticipation, slow-moving, harp: blurring of what film characters can hear and what audience can hear (what is source, what is score?) We hear drums and rest of the orchestra. In scene, they say listen (is it the drums or the orchestra?) Happening because rules have not been figured out. Dancing is synchronized to music but we only see drums (when whole orchestra is playing)
