Document Summary

Women in punk music is still difficult bc of respectable feminine behavior and how funk and rock music is about aggression and aggressive behavior. How aggression in western culture is mapped onto masculinity. Two important musical reasons: recently, women"s access to technology has been limited to men"s access e. g. instruments that are required to make popular music. Women have been discourage from engagement: musical instruments are gender coded, electric guitar = men, flute = women. These are normalitive behaviors that are breaking down but is still present. In the 1970s, this was very hard for women to participate in this music culture. Anybody should be about to make this kind of music, no techniques offer a way for women to play this kind of music bc they did not have access to the technology and musical instruments. Punk music allow women to participate in the musical culture very important point! Disco music in the early 1970s, disco was a subversive.
