In opera, there are generally 2 modes of singing: recitative: speech-like vocal delivery; emphasis on text, aria: lyrical, melodic, smooth; emphasis on music. Overture, duet (2 singers), trio (3), quartet (4), quintet (5), sextet (6), chorus, etc.
