Motivated by altruism and based on ethical standards and the profession evolves as society, healthcare and social policies change. Early greeks believed in spiritual causes of disease. Hippocrates was the first to make observations of patients and develop treatment on the basis of the patient"s symptoms (father of scientific medicine and western medical ethics) Hippocrates influenced galen (physician who made a large impact on romans) Romans recognized the importance of fresh water + hygiene (they engineered specific baths, toilets, aqueducts and sewers (improving the state of population health) Hebrews: believed 10 commandments promoted health (nutrition) Emphasis on christianity on love (women became the primary leaders of nursing) Indigenous people had knowledge of nursing and treated white settlers. It was possible, but unlikely for doctors/hospitals because of cost and distance.
