NURSING 2L03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Urinary Tract Infection, Urinary Retention, Toilet Training
Document Summary
They are suffering from acute illness where bladder emptying must be closely monitored. They experience bladder failure (fails to empty completely) To minimize the risk of infection when bladder function is impaired or urinary drainage tubes are required. Limiting use of indwelling catheters to essential conditions & removing them as soon as medically indicated. Daily cleansing of the urethral meatus with soap and water or perineal cleanser. Maintaining a free flow of urine through the catheter. Antiseptics applied to the urinary meatus are not effective and should not be applied. Antiseptic solutions placed in drainage bags & complex urinary drainage systems have not been found to be effective. Regularly assess & determine patient"s" functional status (eg. ability to safely stand and/or transfer to a toilet or commode, ability to follow & understand directions, motivation to help in self-care activities, such as using a toilet, commode, or urinal)
