In 2009, the estimated prevalence of diabetes in canada was 6. 8% of the population, or 2. 4 million canadians. This is a 230% increase compared to estimates made in 1998. Approximately half of the new cases of dm diagnosed in 2008/2009 were in individuals agree. Estimates grin the public health agency of canada suggest that 3. 7 million canadians will be diagnosed with diabetes by 2019. Type 2 dm accounts for 90% of diabetes cases. Type 1 makes up the other 5-10% with gestational diabetes making up for the rest. More than 10 million canadians currently live with diabetes or pre diabetes. The prevalence of diabetes is signi cantly lower in children and adolescents than adults. Among adults, the prevalence increase with age from approximately 2% of adults in their 30s, to 1 in 5 adults aged 75-79 years old. There is a signi cantly higher prevalence of diabetes in males compared to females.
