Document Summary

Many of the pathological conditions you will encounter throughout your career as a nurse are very much related to the in ammatory process: meningitis, appendicitis, bursitis, laryngitis, endocarditis, dermatitis. -itis = in ammation is at the heart of the disease process. In ammation can be speci c (the immune response) or non-speci c (the in ammatory response) In ammation can be inane (meaning natural or present at birth) or acquired (evolving over time after birth) We have 3 types of defence mechanisms: natural barriers (our rst line of defence) include the epithelial layer of the skin and mucous membranes lining the gastrointestinal, genitourinary tracts and respiratory tracts. These physical barriers include mechanical and chemical types. Mechanical means of ridding the body of pathogens include sloughing, sneezing, coughing, vomiting, urinating and the lial action of the respiratory tract. Low skin temperatures discourage the growth of bacteria. Chemical barriers include mucous, perspiration, saliva, tears, and earwax that trap and kill microorganisms.
