Schizophrenia has been described as a disconnection between thought and language. There is an interference with the filtering of stimuli from the environment which affects a person"s thoughts, feelings, perceptions and overall behaviours. Schizophrenia is a complex disorder which occurs in about 1. 3% of the population in canada. 10% of persons with schizophrenia will commit suicide. The dsm-5 states that schizophrenia is a mixture of positive and negative symptoms that present for a significant portion of a 1 month period but with continuous signs of disturbance persisting for at least. Two (or more) of the following, each present for a significant portion of time during a 1 month period (or less if successfully treated). At least one of these must be 1), 2), or 3): 1) delusions, 2) Hallucinations, 3) disorganized speech, 4) grossly disorganized or catatonic behaviour, and 5) negative symptoms.
