Prevalence of mdd (major depressive disorder) is 2% in children (male:female, 1:1), and 4-8% in adolescents (male:female, 1:2) 5-10% children/adolescents have increased risk of developing mdd. A spectrum disorder: symptoms ranging from subsyndromal to syndromal. Syndromal: have at least 2 weeks of persistent change in mood from depression or irritability, anhedonia. Other symptoms: wishing to be dead, suicidal ideation/attempt, increased/decreased appetite, weight, sleep, decreased activity, concentration, energy, self-worth, exaggerated guilt. Symptoms cause a change from previous functioning, produce impairment in relationships. Symptoms not attributed to substance abuse, medications, other psychiatric illness, death in family, medical illness. Sad: symptoms of depression during season with less daylight. Dd (depressive disorder) = long term change in mood, less intense, have depressed mood most days for period of 1 year. 40-90% of youths with dd also have other psychiatric disorders (most frequent: anxiety disorders) Several psychiatric & medical disorders, depressive reactions to stressors may co-occur with or mimic.
