Severe sepsis along with septic shock - mortality rate = 40% Some patients even hospitalized for sepsis more than once during a year. Canadian sepsis hospitalization rates: most recent canadian study shows moratlity rates related to sepsis when it is either an underlying or contributing cause of death or in many cases, both. Statistics show that roughly 1 in 18 deaths in 2011 in canada involved sepsis: highlighting the importance of identifying sepsis and treating it asap. Sepsis costs: hospitalization related sepsis costs = much higher than other illnesses. Sepsis rates are higher in elderly and those who are immunocompromised: our populations are aging -- expect to see more sepsis cases in the future, many resources are being devoted to this area of research. Gender: mortality rates are higher in males -- recently (before it was women -- who had a sepsis 2 diagnosis (severe sepsis)
