Description
Attention Deficiencies and the Restructuring of thought itself  Question: May it be that the effects of net culture are generationally relative? Wellmon Against Naïve techno Pessimism and Optimism  TO: see net as a liberating force in the world, a new era of collective awareness and intelligence  PT: see net as degenerate of deep thought and intelligence  Wellmon thinks advocacy of these views are naïve because: o 1) Fail to put their views in historical context o 2) Assume the effects of technology are separable from the boarder casual networks of their historical and social context  1) TP/O: founded on assumptions about the superiority of old reading practices over the new, or vise versa  Historically minded assessment recognizes the relative nature of our preferences for one technology over another  2) It erroneous to ascribe causal effects to tech in itself  Presupposes that tech has casual efficacy independent of the context in which it is situated  Naïve tech p/o commit a mereological fallacy: they ascribe properties to the part that are only properly ascribable to the whole
