Religion 2C03 Tutorial 1 • T.A: Maggie O’Brien o Email: [email protected] o Office Hours: Thursdays 12:30 p.m.­1:30 p.m. University Hall (UH) B106A • Can miss 2 tutorials without losing marks • Act utilitarianism o Not clear that a person can be committed to anything  I.e. Integrity problem­ Can’t be a vegetarian because at a point, act  utilitarianism may say you have to eat meat  Can be a person of integrity but committed to act utilitarianism • Rule utilitarianism o Rule creates more utility than disutility  Moral rules not legal rules • I.e. etiquette rules • AU principle of utility ­> Right action • RU principle of utility ­> Moral rules ­> Right action o Les Miserables film­steals bread to feed his family, goes to jail, did he do  something morally wrong? No  RU seems to fall back into AU, rule against stealing but you are an  exception so you can feed your family, re­characterize action which  becomes question of AU  RU is very general  Categorizing our action, steal to feed hungry children, puts acts in  conflict • Kant o Very strict o Consequences don’t matter (
