Document Summary
Two phases of appreciation: perception of qualities. Defective organs cause people to be bad judges: reaction to perception. So(cid:373)eti(cid:373)es (cid:449)he(cid:374) people disag(cid:396)ee it(cid:859)s (cid:271)e(cid:272)ause the(cid:455) see diffe(cid:396)e(cid:374)t things. Other times, it may be because of different emotional effects. Hume looks at what causes this: differences of delicacy. Some people are more moved by small subtle differences: differences of practice. Some people have inclination to work more on their taste. Normally favour experience: differences in partiality. May favour artist so extend that favouritism to work. Not right to call differences in partiality a difference in taste. Depe(cid:374)ds o(cid:374) pe(cid:396)so(cid:374)(cid:859)s p(cid:396)i(cid:448)ate (cid:396)elatio(cid:374) to a(cid:396)tist (cid:858)(cid:373)ust fo(cid:396)get i(cid:374)di(cid:448)idual (cid:271)ei(cid:374)g a(cid:374)d pe(cid:272)ulia(cid:396) (cid:272)i(cid:396)(cid:272)u(cid:373)sta(cid:374)(cid:272)e hume. Judgement of taste must be disinterested: does not mean uninterested. It means impartial: pleasure that is disinterested means feeling aroused naturally. Respond depends only on nature not on private interest. Those who praise artists who are friends are being unreasonable. Unreasonable for other people to take that preference serious.
