Two basic parts in relationship between employee and employer: employees stand in contractual relationship with employer. Agreement of exchange of good and services (have some about of value) Mutual exchange of promises that gov. believes is important enough to enforce. Employee"s welfare is directly contingent on company: in order to survive and ourish, need to get money by working, allow you wage that is used for everything else in life. Employees spending about half their life working: how company is, signi cantly affects quality of life, working conditions, racism, sexism, etc, biggest stakeholder in company, determines your survival, and quality of everyday life. England would pay just enough for bare survival (cannot quit and have to keep showing up to work) Would not compensate for accidents, wages would be stopped, nothing provided to help. Foreigners in temp work get 85% pay (rev. in 2013)
