Todd may: intensity of engagement vs. sappho: intensity of desire. One person loving another, coming together, and creating a third entity. Seems to be describing what we might consider the ideal couple relation full of respect, profound intimacy. Sappho makes a contrast with this description intensity of desire but painful and pleasurable. Sappho is describing the passion of falling in love or lust. Desire is not here an event that presents love. When we think of the experience of love, we don"t like it. Anne carson: we love the chase, the feeling of desire. The bitter sweet feelings when we miss someone, you don"t want to leave to miss someone, but its so sweet, yet painful sometimes we just want that experience. Eros once again limb-loosener whirls me sweetbitter, impossible to fight off, creature stealing up (a different translation): Eros the melter of limbs (now again) stirs me sweetbitter unmanageable creature who steals in (fragment 130)
