PHILOS 1A03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Rationality
Document Summary
Phaedo is socrates" friend; tells the story of when socrates was in prison following his trial. Socrates has to stay in jail until his execution. Due to religious festival during time of his trial, he has to wait until it is over to be executed. Has had a recurring dream where a voice tells him to practice the arts. Determines that now is the time to do so. The phadeo describes the last day of socrates" life (drinks poison and dies at the end) Says only the wicked should fear death but philosophers shouldn"t. Death is when the soul and body separate and that philosophy requires one to turn away from the body and and towards the soul. He believes philosophers live their whole lives to free their soul from the confusing obstacle of the body. Truth is known by reason; our bodies and senses distract us from this. The work of philosophy is to be free from the body.
