Document Summary

Philos 1a03 - feb 3/16 - plato"s republic, book 7 and introduction to. Slaves chained in a cave who can only face forward at the blank cave wall. Right behind them are another kind of being, the masters. The masters hold up silhouettes casting a shadow on the wall that the slaves see; the silhouettes are their reality. Their whole life is looking at these shadows, they don"t know anything about the masters, the fire or the cut-outs. Slave escapes his chains and finds an opening, sees the fire and thinks this is the brightest thing he has ever seen. Then follows the opening and see the light. He sees the real version of all the things he"s seen silhouettes of; the real reality. He decides to go back and tell the others about what he"s found. They"re proud of their "science", being able to predict silhouettes based on the other silhouettes but they are so naive.
