Document Summary

Philos 1a03 - mar 23 - spinoza: body and mind. Every idea represents some affection of a body. Your mind is the comprehensive idea of your body. Each finite mind is an idea in the infinite mind of god. Therefore, your mind is god"s idea of your body. The mind and the body are not two separate things as previously believed (descartes) Your mind and body are one thing, one finite being. Any modification of substance automatically modifies all the attributes (different qualities of one substance) Can"t change the mind without also changing the body (& vice versa) There is no mental-physical dependence, they are different aspects of one being. Substance is not mental or physical per sse. Rather, mentality is one attribute of substance, and corporality is another attribute. One and the same substance is a set of ideas and a set of physical events that those ideas represent (explain) Every body is also an idea in god"s mind.
