Document Summary
Frankena: reconciling ethical theories & common sense morality. Perform act with the best consequences (i. e. requires) Most acts in the permitted category; accepts some constraints. Not many positive obligations, though perhaps some negative ones (such as no murdering or stealing) Criticisms: permits too much, no positive duties to others. Forbidden to perform certain acts, even if they maximize good (i. e. constraints) Morality is made for man, not man for morality . It matters what is good for us when we are making rules, so we can"t let the world burn like kant wants. Prima facie duties, but sometimes they conflict, so then you have back-and-forth over which one wins out. Specific rules and judgements derived from these two duties. Principle of beneficence: ought not to inflict evil/harm, ought to prevent evil/harm, ought to remove evil, ought to do or promote good ( but this is only sometimes required)
