State of nature = fundamental idea in a lot of political philosophy. Sought philosophical basis of a lasting peace. Fled and ran to live in france for a while, fearing for his safety. Question of the time = how can we rise above this state? (stability and prosperity) Interested in what the basis of a firm and stable society meant. Definition = view that everything that exists if matter (ie physical state) For what is the heart, but a spring; and the nerves, but so many strings; and the joints, but so many wheels, giving motion to the whole body . Things a materialist would rule out: god (immaterial being), immortal soul, etc) Opposite of materialist = idealist (believing how the external world is constituted, expressing the role of consciousness) Empiricism: the view that all knowledge is derived from the evidence of the senses.
