PHILOS 2X03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Immortal Souls, Planetary System
Document Summary
Early modern philosophers and scientists changed philosophy by commenting on the work of their predecessors (aristotle + medieval commentators) Before, there was not enough energy from plants, animals and human labour to produce more energy. But with technological innovations, more power/energy becomes available. Ability to produce more energy suggests greater human control of nature than previously thought. Heliocentric (sun-centered) model of planetary system replaces geocentric model. Committed to god as creator of the universe, not merely the designer. Did not cohere easily with the mechanism of early modern science and new ideas of cosmology. Observe things falling down (and not falling off the earth) No balance problems (if earth was moving) Technological innovations provided more data about cosmology. Human beings viewed as machines (not immortal souls)
