Beyond Good and Evil
The Meaning of the Death of God
1. The death of the moral God of revealed religion; i.e. the preeminently good and just
God who acts as the measure of goodness and eternal judge of good and evil
2. The supesensoy realm of Platonic metaphysics; i.e. the renunciation of the eternal,
the same, the absolute, the ideal form (esp. the good, the true, and the beautiful)
o We have this idea of what constitutes an ideally health body, and a notion of the
soul/person which constitutes well being of soul
o We have look beyond world of time, place, matter and desire, and look for
something eternal
3. The ultimate source of meaning and purpose of life; i.e. the denial of ultimate
teleology and fundamental axiology at once there is no transcendent goal existing
beyond this life
o End of action/purposes
o Completely imminent
o Establishes nihilism and Will to Power (124-5)
Will to power is not someone willing to obtain power, but a concept
that we want to preserve ourselves in being, but also increase our
power and expand our capacity for action, concept of preservation
increase
Nihilism is the value system, which takes on 2 forms: fundamental
orientation to value as such, and origin of value; the highest values will
devalue themselves AND we can be nihilistic by being no sayers, saying
no to power, resentment
Noble Spirits
Nobility: within the herd of humanity, some gain ascendency by virtue of their
aberrant strength (either of body, or of mind, or of personality, etc.); i.e. expressing
Will to Power (124-5, 130)
o Nietzsche: the noble type of man regards himself as a determiner of values
a creator of values (126)
The origin of values and the adoption of values is located in the distance between
high and low and the ability of the high to determine values in relation to the low
(124)
o Mysterious pathos adopt moral code from those who give the marching
