We have to ask ourselves what kind of people we should be; how. Someone might tell you that you shouldn"t torture people for the fun of it. And you might ask why should i act morally if it"s not within my self interest? . If someone told you you should eat, you wouldn"t question it, you wouldn"t say why should i eat? . If what is morally right coincides with what"s in your self interest, then you do it. But sometimes when it doesn"t coincide, you end up questioning it. If it"s in your self interest to do something that"s morally wrong, then you do it. ** note : sometimes people just don"t realize that what they"re doing is in their self interest** Psychological egoist (there is debate about whether he is one, but his text seems to support it men do things for their own benefit )
