We have a rich representation of the world around us. Na ve realism- the information is always available, but really you fool yourself. Note- only see what you look at. We allow certain information to flow into consciousness, as there is a lot of other information we are not aware of. Alerting: heightened awareness, loud sound, bright light. Orienting: spatial selection, voluntary and automatic, loud noises vs. look over here . Selection: channels, locations and modalities, some info is selected, or not selected. Limited processing capacity: how many things can you do simultaneously, certain amount of information at a time. Unattended items are free-flowing, unless you"re attended to something, the knowledge you have about something is not there. Early selection model: attention selects before object processes. Late selection model: attention acts on object representations. Meaning of second passage was not attended. Information comes into the senses, there is a short term store (ms-s)
