Human hair = 0. 2 mm = 200 . With the naked eye, we can see down to 0. 1 mm. Dust mites (200 ) on hairy parts of the body, pillows etc. 100 trillion bacteria in the large intestine, about 10% are e. coli. Plenty of bacteria in the mouth, nasal cavities, skin etc. Staphylococcus: typically harmless residents on the skin and mucous membranes. Ability to acquire a neuronal representation of new information. An individual may use that information to determine subsequent behaviour. Even organisms with no nervous system modify their behaviour based on experience. Ex: phototaxis, geotaxis, chemotaxis, reflexes (e. g. knee jerk, eye blink) Ability of organisms and cells to move up or down chemical gradients. Ex: taxis by sperm in the female genital tract: how does sperm find the egg, muscle contractions, thermotaxis, chemotaxis, decades of research on simple behaviour (chemotaxis) in bacteria have contributed to applied research on reducing human infertility.
