Coding responses - sorting everything into mutually exclusive categories (nominal data) Dealing with off-topic responses - jokes, non-serious responses. Could be based off of open-ended data from the past. Problem: possible responses may not include participant"s true response. Force people to choose between 1 or more items. 1 = strongly agree to 5 = strongly disagree. Sometimes, it"s very difficult not to choose neutral option. Useful for data entry; avoids errors because input made by participant. Semi-structured interview with some prepared questions, then ask participant to elaborate. Good interviewer might make participant try harder in responses. Random digit dialing of who is in phone book. Only reliable when assumed that all families have phones. Around 30 percent of americans were cell phone only.
