PNB 3RM3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Facilitated Communication, Empiricism
Document Summary
Rationalism - the idea that knowledge can only be gained through reason and logical argument. Empiricism - use of objective observations to answer a question. Systematic empiricism - collecting information to support a hypothesis. Open to all information, even if it disproves a hypothesis. Trying to tell a story with the information collected. Skepticism - carefully weighting all information and approaching information with a questioning attitude. Mozart effect - playing mozart to your baby will make them smarter (false) Actual application: students who listened to mozart before trial did better on a spatial reasoning task. Baby einstein - no evidence to support that these games make your baby smarter. Could have repercussions as parent would be ignoring baby while baby is watching, leading to negative developmental outcomes during development (babies need physical contact for proper development) Facilitated communication - a course offered to reveal the thoughts of non-verbal people.
